British journalist Alistair Cooke relates a story that reveals Bobby Jones' character and kindness.
During the 1929 U.S. Open, when Bobby Jones discovered his playoff with Al Espinosa was scheduled to begin at 9 the next morning, he suggested the officials move it to 10, so Espinosa, a devout Catholic, could attend Mass.
Bobby Jones helps out his friend, and fellow founder of Augusta National, Cliff Roberts. It was said of Jones the he was imbued in almost equal proportions of humanity, humor, courtesy, and respect.
Bobby Jones confers the first USGA Award for Distinguished Sportsmanship to his friend Francis Quimet, in 1955. The Sportsmanship Award is named after Jones and is one of the USGA¿s highest honors.
